works.

Atheneum is modular — you will only ever see the tools you have enabled. Treat this as a catalogue to dip into rather than a manual to read end to end.

How Atheneum is put together.

The tool library is the product. Everything else follows from it.

The Tool Library

Sidebar → Tool Library

Atheneum does not hand you a fixed app. Every feature sits in a library, and your workspace is whatever you pull out of it. A student revising for finals and a student writing a dissertation should not see the same sidebar, and here they don't.

How to use it

  1. Open Tool Library from the sidebar.
  2. Browse by category — Study, Focus, Productivity, AI, Integrations, Accessibility.
  3. Toggle a tool on to add it to your sidebar; toggle it off to shelve it. Nothing is deleted — a shelved tool keeps its data and comes back exactly as you left it.
  4. Drag the entries in your sidebar to reorder them.
  5. Settings → Workspace → Reset Tool Library defaults puts everything back.

Worth knowing

  • Your selection is stored in this browser. Signing in on another device starts from defaults.
  • Tools marked as planned appear in the library but cannot be enabled yet.

Accounts and guest mode

Sign up / Sign in

You can use the timer, notes, tasks, music, platforms, and the tool library without an account. Vault, Athena, Review, calendar, dashboard, and saved stats need sign-in. Continue as guest if you want to preview those locked pages instead of bouncing to sign-in. Guest and signed-out activity is not saved to an account.

How to use it

  1. Open Pomodoro, Notes, Tasks, Music, Platforms, or the Tool Library from the marketing site or after Continue as guest.
  2. Create an account with an email and password, or with Google, to unlock the vault. Athena is included on Pro.
  3. Verify your email from the link we send.
  4. Anything created as a guest stays on that device; it does not transfer into a new account.

Worth knowing

  • An account whose email has never been verified cannot be linked to Google sign-in later — that guard stops someone claiming your address before you do.

Where your material lives.

The vault feeds almost everything else, so it is worth filling properly.

Study Vault

Sidebar → Study Vault

The vault holds your course material, organised into notebooks — one per module, subject, or exam — each holding files and optional folders. Almost every AI feature reads from here, so what you put in determines how useful the rest of the app is.

How to use it

  1. Create a notebook and give it a name, colour, and cover.
  2. Open it and upload files — PDF, DOCX, PPTX, or TXT, up to 20MB each.
  3. Atheneum extracts the text. Structured summaries are a Pro feature.
  4. Use folders inside a notebook once it gets large.
  5. Each file offers download. Flashcard export is on Pro. Quiz generation is on Pro+.

Worth knowing

  • Free: 7 notebooks, 25 files each. Pro: 25 and 100. Pro+: 50 and 250.
  • Uploads are private to your account and are never used to train models.

Flashcards

Pro

Study Vault → open a file → Generate flashcards

Question-and-answer pairs generated from a file you uploaded, so the cards cover your actual course rather than a generic deck.

How to use it

  1. Open a processed file in the vault.
  2. Choose Generate flashcards.
  3. Review the cards in place, or export them.
  4. Export produces tab-separated text that imports directly into Anki.

Worth knowing

  • Flashcard generation is included on Pro.
  • Generated cards are a starting point. Fix anything the model got wrong before you drill it in.

AI Quiz Generator

Pro+

Study Vault → open a file → Generate quiz

A mixed quiz built from one of your files, then graded with feedback on the topics you are weakest in.

How to use it

  1. Pick a processed file and generate a quiz — around seven questions, roughly 60% multiple choice.
  2. Answer and submit.
  3. You get a score, a list of weak topics, and the file is flagged for review if you struggled.
  4. Attempts are recorded so you can see improvement over time.

Worth knowing

  • Each generated quiz can be graded once, always against the questions the server issued.

Review

Pro

Sidebar → Review

Notebook-level revision. Where the vault works file by file, Review works across a whole notebook — pooling every summary and generating quizzes that span the subject rather than a single lecture.

How to use it

  1. Open Review and choose a notebook.
  2. Generate a notebook summary — key ideas, concepts to revisit, a five-minute recap.
  3. Generate a quiz across the notebook, choosing difficulty and question count.
  4. Take it; attempts and accuracy are tracked per notebook.

Worth knowing

  • Needs at least one processed file — it summarises what is there, it cannot invent material.
  • Notebook summaries are on Pro. Generating new quizzes from Review is Pro+.

Notes

Sidebar → Notes

A fast scratchpad for the thought you need to catch mid-lecture, without creating a file.

How to use it

  1. Open Notes and start typing. It saves as you go.

Worth knowing

  • Notes are stored in your browser, not on our servers. They do not sync between devices, and clearing site data removes them. Put anything you cannot lose in the Study Vault.

Study Resources

Sidebar → Study Resources

Academic paper search backed by Semantic Scholar, alongside guides to study techniques that have evidence behind them.

How to use it

  1. Search by topic for titles, abstracts, authors, year, and citation counts.
  2. Open-access papers link straight to the PDF.
  3. Read the technique guides for spaced repetition, active recall, and interleaving.

Worth knowing

  • Only your search terms leave Atheneum. Your identity is not sent with them.

Timers, breathing, and music that follow you around the app.

Pomodoro timer

Sidebar → Pomodoro

25 minutes of work, 5 of rest, a longer break every fourth round. Completed sessions feed your streak and the dashboard charts.

How to use it

  1. Start a session, optionally labelling the work and tagging it to a notebook.
  2. The timer keeps running as you navigate — a compact version stays pinned in the sidebar.
  3. Sound, notifications, and the celebration animation are configurable in Settings.

Worth knowing

  • The timer works without an account. Sessions are recorded and points are awarded only when you are signed in.

Breathing timer

Guided breathing for the moment before an exam, or after a session that went badly.

How to use it

  1. Expand the breathing panel, pick box / 4-7-8 / calm, and follow the animation.

Music

Sidebar → Music

Focus playlists that keep playing while you move around the app.

How to use it

  1. Open Music, choose a playlist, carry on working. Controls stay in the sidebar.

Deadlines, tasks, and honest numbers.

Including the weeks you did nothing, because that is the useful part.

Tasks

Sidebar → Tasks

A kanban board for assignments and to-dos — columns you drag cards between.

How to use it

  1. Add a card to any column.
  2. Drag between columns as work progresses.
  3. Add or rename columns to match how you work.

Worth knowing

  • Like Notes, the board is stored in your browser and does not sync across devices.

Calendar

Sidebar → Calendar

Study sessions, deadlines, and reminders in month, week, or day view — with optional two-way sync to Google Calendar.

How to use it

  1. Create an event with a title, time, and colour.
  2. Mark it as an event, reminder, or deadline; deadlines are styled distinctly.
  3. Connect Google Calendar in Settings → Integrations to mirror events across.
  4. Disconnect at any time; that deletes the stored tokens immediately.

Worth knowing

  • Google access and refresh tokens are encrypted before storage.

Dashboard

Sidebar → Dashboard

Focus minutes, study streak, activity heatmap, and where your time went by subject.

How to use it

  1. Open the dashboard. It fills in as you use the other tools; a new account starts mostly empty.

The AI tutor, and its limits.

Useful most of the time, confidently wrong some of the time.

Athena

Sidebar → AI Assistant, or the dock on any page

A tutor that has read your material. A general chatbot can explain thermodynamics; Athena can explain the thermodynamics in the slides you uploaded, and cite the file she took it from.

How to use it

  1. Open the assistant from the sidebar, or the floating dock available anywhere.
  2. Select a notebook or file to focus on, so answers come from that material first.
  3. Drag a file into the chat to pull it in as context.
  4. Upload a file directly — PDF, TXT, DOCX, or PPTX, up to 10MB, five per conversation.
  5. Conversations are saved. Pin the ones you want to keep permanently.

Worth knowing

  • Tune the tutor profile: difficulty, pace, and style (visual, verbal, practical).
  • Unpinned conversations are deleted after 30 days without use. Pinned ones are kept until you delete them (5 pins maximum).
  • Chat history is encrypted before it is stored.
  • Athena is included on Pro and Pro+, metered with monthly AI tokens. Extra tokens are a one-time pack. The dock and assistant page are locked on Free.
  • Tokens are a shared pool: Athena replies, summaries, flashcards, grading, lesson plans, and quizzes all spend from the same allowance.

Where Athena is wrong

Applies to every AI feature

Athena runs on a large language model. It will sometimes state something false with complete confidence, misattribute an idea, or invent a citation that looks plausible. This is a property of the technology, not a bug about to be fixed.

How to use it

  1. Treat every factual claim as a lead to verify, not an answer to memorise.
  2. Check anything heading into submitted work against your actual source.
  3. When she cites a file, open it and confirm it says that.
  4. Know your institution's rules on AI assistance before relying on generated material.

Pricing

Free covers the whole workspace with caps on AI usage and storage. Pro removes the AI caps and unlocks Review and PDF export. Pro+ raises storage limits further.

How to use it

  1. Compare tiers on the pricing page.
  2. Checkout runs through Paddle, which handles payment and issues your receipt.
  3. Manage or cancel from Settings → Plan. Cancelling keeps access to the end of the paid period.

Worth knowing

  • We never see your card details — Paddle is the merchant of record.

Account security

What to do if you think someone else has access.

How to use it

  1. Change your password — this signs out every other device automatically.
  2. Use Sign out everywhere else to clear other sessions without changing your password.
  3. Sessions last 30 days from sign-in.

Exporting and deleting your data

Settings

Your work is yours, including the part where you take it elsewhere.

How to use it

  1. Export a notebook to PDF from the vault (Pro).
  2. Export flashcards in Anki format.
  3. Clear Study Vault removes files and notebooks but keeps your account.
  4. Delete account removes everything — files, notebooks, chats, tasks, calendar, points — immediately and permanently.

Worth knowing

  • Deletion is not reversible and we cannot recover it. Export first.
